The Most Common Football Injuries You Should Know

Football is one of the most popular sports in America, both to watch and to play. Despite all of the padding, braces, helmets, and supports, it is still one of the most dangerous sports too. Due to the size of the players, the speed of the game, and its physical nature, injuries occur all too frequently. Professional players, recreational athletes, and children alike are all susceptible to injury while playing this sport. Read on to learn about some of the most common injuries people sustain while playing football.

Concussion

Out of every sport, football poses the highest risk of concussion. According to the Sports Concussion Institute, men who play football have a 75 percent chance of getting a concussion. This ailment is caused by a blow to the head, usually during a tackle when the head snaps and hits the ground. They cause brain impairments and temporary symptoms, such as confusion, memory problems, difficulty concentrating, and more.

Achilles Tendonitis

This condition affects the Achilles tendon, which is located at the back on the ankle, and results in pain, inflammation, and degeneration. There are two types of Achilles tendonitis; acute tendonitis usually resolves itself in a few weeks, whereas the symptoms of chronic tendonitis can last much longer. Muscle Strain

Strained muscles are relatively common among all athletes, especially football players. Muscles strains are also known as pulled muscles or torn muscles. Most frequently, players will strain their hamstring muscles or quadriceps at the front of the thigh. Hamstring strains generally result in a sudden, sharp pain along the back of the thigh. This usually occurs when running, doing a fast stretching movement, or performing a high kick.

Metatarsal Stress Fracture

The metatarsal bones are the long, skinny bones located between the toes and the middle of the foot that give the foot its arched appearance. When you walk, weight transfers from the toes to the metatarsal bones. A metatarsal stress fracture is a thin break in one of these bones. They are usually caused by overuse, excessive rotation, or direct trauma. Pain from a metatarsal stress fracture typically develops gradually.

Ankle Sprain

Sprained ankles are also very common with football players. The symptoms of an ankle sprain include swelling, pain, bruising, and difficulty walking, and they can range from mild to severe. Sprains are usually treated using the RICE method of rest, ice, compression, and elevation. They are much easier and faster to cure when they are caught early.

Rotator Cuff Strains

The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles responsible for supporting and stabilizing the arm at the shoulder joint. The pain caused by a rotator cuff strain usually comes on suddenly, and some even feel a tearing sensation. Pain is typically severe and can radiate down the whole arm. These injuries occur because of overuse and repetitive motion, such as from throwing a ball, or from a trauma, a fall, or tackle.
